John Salmons Stays with Milwaukee

The Milwaukee Bucks continued to spend money no one knew they had, inking small forward John Salmons (number 12 on the Big Board) to a 5 year, $39 million deal. Salmons, who was acquired from the Bulls in February, was the catalyst behind the Bucks run into the post season where they took the heavily favored Hawks to 7 games. My take on this is divided. On the one hand, I’m not a huge Salmons fan. I think he is decidedly mediocre at a lot of things and at times I very much question his motivation. It seems he plays really well when he first gets to a new team and then gets sluggish after the honeymoon period. He’s also not a superior athlete and whereas some players work around that, it seems to me like Salmons doesn’t really understand his own limitations. On the other hand, though, he was Milwaukee’s best scorer last year and played a vital role for them. I think Salmons benefits tremendously from the addition of Corey Maggette, a natural athletic scorer who will take a lot of the offensive load away from Salmons. And hey, if nothing else, the Bucks got a proven, NBA starter capable of scoring 20 points per game for only $5 million more than what the Raptors paid Amir Johnson.
