With Derek Fisher headed for the nursing home any day now, the LA Lakers turned to the services of Steve Blake (number 42 on the Big Board) to fill their point guard needs, signing him to a 4 year, $16 million deal. Blake is a bit of a weird player and one who I think suffers from Big Moment Desire. He’s got an outrageously high basketball IQ and is an underrated contributor in general. And yet, in end game situations, he often makes boneheaded plays that leave you scratching your head. I think it all boils down to a desire, or maybe even a need, to hit the big shot. If he can control that impulse, though, there are few point guards who better understand their roles than Blake and you have to assume Kobe puts him in his place immediately. $4 million a year is a fair market value, too.
